Press Release for Gallery One Show

Throughout the academic year, Gallery One at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor will be exploring issues surrounding the movement that has transformed traditional American crafts from functional into content-based creations.  The second exhibition in this series, Transitions/Translations:  Innovations in Basketry, will be held January 10 to March 14, 2005.  Artists Carol Eckert, John Garrett, Lissa Hunter, Ferne Jacobs, John McQueen, Mary Merkel-Hess, and Karyl Sisson  will exhibit their innovative sculptural works.  Although the content of their work is widely different, each artist uses basketry techniques to create these unique and intriguing shapes.

On February 7th, there will be a reception in the gallery from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m.  Following the reception, Becky Hart, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the DIA, will be speaking  on the 20th Century Basketry Movement in room 375 of the Language Arts Building.

On February 9th from 12:30-4:00 p.m., Cherilyn Braun will be conducting a workshop in basic basketry techniques.  This is an exploration of many of the methods used in creating a basket.  The workshop will take place in room 172 of the Language Arts Building.

On March 7th and 8th, Danielle Bodine will be offering a workshop on Creating Sculptural Form with Basketry Techniques from 6-9:00 p.m.  (This is a two session class.)

Although all events are free and open to the public, due to space limitations, it is necessary to register with the gallery at (734) 477-8512 for both workshops.  The gallery is located in the Student Center Building on the first floor in room 108.  The Student Center Building is at the center of the college's campus on East Huron River Dr. in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  Gallery hours are M/T 10:00 am to 6:00 p.m., W/Th 10:00 am to 8:00 p.m., F 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Saturday by arrangement.  Gallery phone number for further information is (734) 477-8512.
